For What It's Worth Wednesday: Toms? Really?

For What It's Worth...Ok, I know I am going to get some backlash for this (but hey, has that ever stopped me before?) I don't mean to be a traitor to the craft/sewing blog community here, but seriously, why is everyone so in love with Toms? I think they look like boats. Especially on the leggy college girls who love them so much around here. Tall, thin, long legs + Toms = OMG your feet are enormous. Am I wrong? Maybe there is something about them that I'm missing, if so please let me know. I genuinely want to know why all the fuss over these shoes.

I get that the company is charitable, donating a pair of shoes for every pair of shoes bought. That's fantastic, don't get me wrong. In fact I admire the company for being such a positive force. But I am still not going to spend $60 on shoes that are only going to make my feet look bigger (I wear a 9...maybe you ladies with smallish feet look better in Toms.) I would rather buy a pair of shoes that flatter my feet and buy a pair of childrens' sneakers and donate them myself to a child in my community, because Lord knows there are people right here in Eastern North Carolina who need the help.

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, but I've been wondering for a while now what the deal is with these shoes, and I honestly want to know your thoughts. Is it an emperor's new clothes phenomenon in which people love the company so much they make themselves love the look of the shoes? Because they do have some really cute ones on the website, but they aren't the ones that people are so crazy about. Are they extremely comfortable? Like walking on a cloud? Are they secretly slimming? Do they possess some magical powers of which I am unaware? Or do you just like the way they look and I'm crazy?

  2. I want to get my 11 month old son a pair. But the only reason why is his name is Tom. I think it would be cute for Tom's shoes to be Toms! LOL!!

    1. Actually the children's ones don't bother me. (And it would be sooo cute to have Tom wearing Toms!) Actually the men's don't bother me that much either. But for women? Eh.

  4. I am right there with you. You are not crazy.

  5. My sis has some and she loves them because they are so comfortable. They are like slippers. so for that reason i get them. She has worn holes in them. I don't think they are very durable. I don't mind them if worn with certain jeans or a fun casual skirt but with skinny jeans its a sin!

I don't think I will ever own a pair unless this cheapskate can find some for a STEAL :)

    1. YES!!! With skinny jeans or a skirt I think they look awful.

  6. Comfy or not, I think they look awful! They remind me of the slip on shoes that everyone used to wear in the early 90s...don't remember the name...but every guy I knew owned a pair of checkerboard patterned ones. I had them too...and splatter painted mine if I remember. I don't get it either!

    1. Vans. I remember those. All the boys in school had a pair and I always hate them, too. So ugly. lol

    2. VANS! YES I remember those. Poor 90s. We had some really bad fashion.

  7. Absolutely ugly. My feet are big and clunky enough without my shoes betraying me, too.

  8. I can't decide my opinion on them. Great cause, and I think the little sparkly ones would be super cute on my 2 year old. But I can't decide if I'd like them for me or not. =]

  9. I absolutely detest them!!!! I just graduated from college, and I was the only- and I DO mean only- girl in my group of friends who did not own and has absolutely no desire to own a pair. Yuck. I REALLY can't stand the wedding ones.

    2. OMG....they have WEDDING ones???? WHY????

    3. Yes, and my dear, dear friend has informed me she will be wearing them at her wedding and expects the bridesmaids to wear them also. WHY is right!!

  10. My guess is that the shoes aren't popular because of their look or even comfort, but as a status symbol, kind of like when you donate to National Public Radio and then slap a bumper sticker on your car so everybody else will know how generous you are. I have donated stuff, but I don't need a $60 (or whatever they are) pair of shoes to let everybody know about it. I also think they are ugly, but I don't like most of what is fashionable these days.

  11. I agree. They are pretty fug. I like the concept and like them on toddlers (much like Crocs) but they'll never grace my feet.

The new ballerina flats look cute but I'd like to see them in person before I judge.

  12. my girls have them...as far as holding up, my daughter wore a hole in both toes of hers...to me they aren't very durable..but, everybody wants some...not sure they are for me though...i can't see paying that much for a pair of shoes for myself...

    1. See?! This is what boggles my mind. Toms actually has some really cute stuff! The wedges are adorable, the ballet flats appear to be cute too. So why, OH WHY do people choose the ugly ones?

    2. I have wondered the same thing...They really are ugly and I don't get the craze.

  14. I'm not offended but they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn in my entire life. If I could live in mine I would. You don't have to wear socks, they have arch support, are breathable, and form to your feet over time. I got mine on sale for 29.99 though.

  15. Totally agree with you. Thanks for the laugh, and the fun post.

  16. I actually agree -- I'd rather just buy a kid a pair of shoes than have those things on my feet.

  17. Lol Alida - I totally agree! I have been wondering the same thing myself - I mean, Tom refashions?! Really? I would be like - THANK GOD, these ugly things finally wore out so I can throw them in the trash now!!! Lol. Ok, maybe that was mean.

I finally pinned a lace pair that I saw and actually liked - problem is, I cant find them for sale anywhere. They do indeed have some cute ones. I was willing to give them a try. Guess me and Toms just weren't made to be :)

  18. If they would replace the "croc" I'd be in full support.(can't stand those)I didn't like the Toms them much either but did buy a pair based on the donation aspect and they are surprisingly comfortable. Mine look like navy boat shoes with a leather strap and went well with white knee length shorts.I've only worn them twice so hopefully I haven't killed all my street cred yet :)

  19. This post cracks me up. I adore my toms. I love the look (I am notorious for wearing "ugly" shoes) EVERYONE in my family hates my Toms. I dont care what they think and I can take the teasing. I can also see why they dont appeal to everyone but they are certainly not a "status symbol" for me at least. I am a slob and these are super comfy and to me - SO CUTE!

  20. I agree...I don't get that fad...I'm a missionary in the Philippines send shoes over here and I will gladly give them to a family in our church...

  21. SO COMFORTABLE. And I actually think they're cute, too. :)

  22. I actually love mine too! They are comfortable and simple and they are my "winter flip flops"!
